Discover our new special guests at KindaVillage: Canadian Geese
What about these glorious birds?
The original home of the Canadian Goose is from North America. Since the 17th century, they migrate ifromUnited-Kingdom and also in Sweden, It breeds in coastal marshes as well as inland on pasture beside water and sometimes also in open woodlands with the lakes and ponds. The nest is located on small islands or in swamps, hollow lined with dry leaves, grass and other vegetation and the eggs are covered with down. Five to six eggs are laid in early April and are incubated by the female alone for 28 to 29 days, while the male keeps careful watch close by. As a rule, they forage for food on dry land, mostly in the early morning or at dusk. The diet consists of grass, grain, shoots, berries, and seeds, occasionally insects, their larvae, and mollusk. The male and the female have similar plumage but the male is more taller (99cm) than the female (93com). Their voice sounds like a hoarse honking or Katja when sleeping. They also drop big turds, we first thought the elephants had landed.
Every Spring to the KindaVillage the Canadian Geese arrive. By their dawn presence and rackett, we know that spring has come! Welcomed by our volunteers but not Stan the Swan who after a 25year ownership of the lake is a bit bossy! We dont expect the beauty of the land to change too much between their visits.
Next step for the Wacky Wagon
The work is progressing! Digging deep for the services, it was necessary to dig a trench of 36 meters long! Hard work day with shovels… But for us, we’ve got our friend Donald, not the Duck but the Digger, and then there’s Darren to talk to it! Soon be ready as our lakeside sanctuary…see it finished in next newsletter. A Green Roof volunteer welcome to add the finishing touch.
A wet March in KV was not helpful to progress but can we ever be ungrateful for fresh water, for sure we can never be ungrateful for the beauty of this countryside and its wildlife. Taking time to walk the full boundary for the first time to feel the healing qualities of the land and the inspiration to label KV as a ‘rejuvenation pasture’ Miriam starting with us has been great in helping with Welsh phrases and humour, Welsh cakes to follow.
With the onset of Spring I have hope for less personal demands to commute from West to East to South and develop a community presence. I hope too that the illusive Pioneers find their destiny at KV, no matter their passion for Social Justice to animal, planet or human.
